Connecting Collections - A Case of Translation

My name is Mirjam Zdybel. I have worked on a project involving the translation of Internet blogs for the Roman Baths Museum into my German mother tongue as part of my Master's programme in Translation Studies at Cardiff University. It has proven to be a difficult challenge, not only due to my unfamiliarity with the field of archaeology, but also due to the high pressure that went with it, because my texts ultimately became publicly accessible. However, the project was also a great opportunity to gain practical experience in translating for a real client and indeed, I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. After Helen, the Collections Assistant at the museum, gave us an in depth briefing and lead us through the museum's exhibitions and behind the scenes, it was my task to conduct thorough research about every aspect mentioned in the blogs. It was absolutely crucial that I present all the terminology and facts accurately, and good time management was also necessary, as I had to work against a strict deadline. All in all, I can genuinely recommend choosing a training placement as part of a course, as I learned a great deal and because it gave me a valuable insight into the daily reality of a translator.’
